Meet Our Trustees

Mike Wash

I trained in York as a psychiatric nurse and nurse tutor. I was also a trainer in counselling skills and later joined British Telecom to help them change their culture due to modernisation. I then became a self-employed business and organisation development consultant and worked for many Health Boards and Hospitals – during this time I was also the Director for Organisational Development at Leeds University Hospitals Trust. I am an author of several books related to business excellence, self-help psychology and psychiatric nursing.

Most of my working life I have been striving to create a healing working environment for service users and staff – making spirituality discussable at work. Since working for The Retreat, as Trustee Director and as Mental Health Act Associate manager, I have been inspired by the Quaker faith and now believe for me, it is a spiritual home.

I have been a Trustee on the Benevolent Fund for 6 years. I am retired now; my professional life was in Local Authority Housing and as a counsellor in Primary Health Care. I have worked voluntarily over many years including for Relate (relationship counselling) and Circles of Support and Accountability and I am also a Trustee for The Retreat, York. I have been a Quaker for almost 30 years.
